St Nicholas’ Chapel in Kings Lynn opened after refurbishment last week in time for the Open Doors national heritage weekend. Open Doors events happen every September and offer members of the public a chance to see inside hundreds of heritage buildings, many of which are privately owned.

The 715 year old building in Kings Lynn is significant as it is England’s largest chapel of Ease. It is one of over 300 churches looked after by Churches Conservation Trust, a not for profit organisation.

Much of the £2.7million restoration was to used to preserve the fabric of the building as well as making vital repairs to the roof. The venue can now be rented out for events thanks to a new kitchen area, new toilets and a dedicated open area which can be used for different events such as open markets. Accessibility has also been improved and new solar panels on the roof generate electricity for the Chapel.

St Nicholas Chapel was reopened by Loyd Grossman, Chairman of Churches Conservation Trust, Adrian Parker Chairman of Friends of St Nicholas’ Chapel and the Mayor of Kings Lynn, Cllr Colin Sampson.
