Archway Leisure Centre,
London Borough of Islington and leisure operator and charitable social enterprise GLL has relaunched Archway Leisure Centre in Islington after extensive refurbishment. The community has convincingly approved of the new facilities with new memberships increasing by 100% within the first two months of opening.
Clarkson Alliance was selected to provide project management, cost management, design and principal designer services for the scheme. Clarkson Alliance works in partnership with charitable social enterprises and Local Authorities to deliver their leisure strategies through optimising facilities. The strategies devised often include increased participation to engage the community in a healthy lifestyle. We work with our customers to provide certainty of outcome for their projects and secure the future of their leisure strategies.
Archway Leisure Centre is operated by GLL, one of the UK’s largest leisure trusts and social enterprises, under their Better brand. GLL embarked on the project after taking over operation of facilities in 2014.
The objective of the project is to improve the quality of facilities, encourage usage and provide a more inclusive environment for the community.
The revitalised leisure centre has an extended gym, a brand new modern reception, new dry changing rooms, a new health suite and redeveloped circulation spaces. Energy savings are built into the scheme through Clarkson Alliance’s sister company, Leisure Energy, who identified significant energy savings.
We worked collaboratively with the project team to deliver Archway Leisure Centre on time and within budget with minimal disruptions to the public, as the centre stayed operational throughout. The original project objectives to raise the quality of the facilities and encourage better usage has been demonstrably accomplished through the dramatic increase in memberships leading to a healthier community in Islington.
The project is the second leisure centre completed as part of a £6.2million investment into 5 centres in the area by the Local Authority in partnership with GLL.
Cally Pool in Islington completed in 2014 and offers local residents an enlarged and refurbished gym and new reception area.
Clarkson Alliance provided design, project management, cost management and principal designer services. The project utilised BIM for design.
